Full charge
The quantity of refrigerant an appliance contains when properly charged, and the denominator of every leak rate calculation.
Full charge is the amount of refrigerant in an appliance when it is charged to its correct operating level. It is the baseline quantity against which losses are measured: leak rates are expressed as a percentage of full charge, and the reporting obligation for chronic leakers is framed as a multiple of full charge lost within a calendar year. Without a reliable full charge figure, none of the percentage based rules can be applied meaningfully.
The concept sounds trivial and is not. Large systems may have been modified, retrofitted, or recharged many times over their lives, and the quantity the nameplate promised at installation may no longer describe the machine as it actually runs. Establishing full charge can rest on manufacturer data, on calculations from the system's components and piping, on established records, or on combinations of these, and the figure deserves to be documented rather than guessed.
For exam purposes, full charge is the quiet term inside every leak rate question: the denominator. When a scenario describes refrigerant additions and asks about thresholds, the arithmetic runs additions against full charge on an annualized, rolling basis. Candidates who keep the definition crisp avoid the classic distractor of measuring losses against the amount currently in a leaking, undercharged system rather than against the properly charged quantity.
