Recovery techniques
Getting refrigerant out of a system before opening it, and how thoroughly. The numbers here are the most-tested figures on the exam.

- Small appliances: 80 percent recovery with equipment made before the late-1993 cutoff; with later equipment, 90 percent when the compressor runs, 80 percent when it does not; or evacuate to four inches of mercury vacuum.
- MVAC and MVAC-like disposal: reduce to 102 mm of mercury vacuum or follow the motor-vehicle rules.
- Self-contained recovery equipment works without the appliance's own components; system-dependent equipment relies on them and may not be used on appliances holding more than 15 pounds unless permanently attached as a pump-out unit.
