Recovery techniques

Getting refrigerant out of a system before opening it, and how thoroughly. The numbers here are the most-tested figures on the exam.

The figures that belong to this topic

  • Small appliances: 80 percent recovery with pre-November 15, 1993 equipment; with later equipment, 90 percent when the compressor runs, 80 percent when it does not; or evacuate to four inches of mercury vacuum.
  • MVAC disposal: reduce to 102 mm of mercury vacuum or follow the motor-vehicle rules.
  • Self-contained recovery equipment works without the appliance's own components; system-dependent equipment relies on them.

Figures per 40 CFR Part 82 Subpart F as published. Type sections are 25 questions each, drawn from the five Group II areas.

How to study it

Read the topic in your prep material once for structure, then drill it through the free practice questions, which cite the regulation paragraph behind every answer. On a closed-book exam the citations are your study tool, not your crutch: they teach you why the answer is what it is.
